How TASO is working with sub recipients to fight malaria in Uganda

With funding from the Global Fund, the TASO Grants Management Unit works with the National Malaria Control Programme (under the Ministry of Health) to fight malaria in Uganda. 

The National Malaria Control Programme aims at ensuring that there is national coverage of malaria prevention and treatment services. It is guided by the Uganda Malaria Reduction Strategic Plan 2014 - 2020 (UMRSP). TASO supports this entity by working with Sub recipients to provide quality services  within the health facilities and communities across the country. 

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

TASO and its Sub Recipients, with technical support from district coordinating offices, provide the following;

  • Case management

Integrated Community Case management (ICCM) - Training of Master trainers, DHMT, VHT Supervisors, VHTs and malaria champions, procurement and distribution of community reporting tools, gumboots and solar lamps, procurement of branded BCC items, coordination meetings and home visits for the VHTs, DHMT ICCM health facility support supervision and semi-annual National support supervision activities.

  • Private sector case management 
Training of health workers on IMM in the private sector
  • Information-Education-Communication/Behavioural Change Communication 
To build knowledge on appropriate prevention and control measures, and improve health seeking behaviours and health worker adherence to treatment guidelines - Audio and Visual BCC messages, Print Media  BCC messages, Community social mobilization to create demand for increased uptake of key malaria prevention and control interventions, Train Teachers and student   to be equipped with malaria skills, Conduct focused household visits by VHTs ( using IPC).

  • Vector Control

Procurement and distribution of LLINs (routine distributions)

Procurement of motorcycles for the DVCOs

Engagement of schools and institutions to scale up uptake of preventive malaria measures, facilitation of malaria talking points in clergy programs

Procurement of SBCC materials to sensitise communities on adherence to malaria control measures.

  • Resilient Health System Strengthening

Community responses and systems – community dialogues

Health management information systems and M&E – training of private sector health workers in routine HMIS reporting, private sector support supervision and operational research

National Health Strategies – training of program officers in Advanced M&E skills

  • Specific preventive Interventions 

Procurement of IPTp commodities to support DOTS for IPTp
